Shimmer (Sea), 2023 is part of a body of work that Grenady initiated with philosopher Fares Chalabi during an artist residency at the Centre Intermondes, Ethnopôle Humanités Océanes in La Rochelle (2021). The aim of this project was to show how the experience of the Lebanese wars and the post-war context influence our experience of the world, and subsequently our way of seeing and apprehending things.
In this body of work, Genadry takes inspiration from the Italian Renaissance painter Fra Angelico, renowned for his ability to portray apparitions, such as in The Annunciation, creating an aura of unreachable space. Similarly, Daniele Genadry uses light itself to explore the concept of apparitional paintings, capturing moments that bridge belief and reality.
In Shimmer (Sea), 2023 Genadry captures the flickering light and movement on the surface of the sea. By adding colour bars to the sides of the canvas, Grenady calls attention to the image as a contained reproduction of reality, which contrasts with the illusion of boundlessness that emanates from it. The undulating rhythm of the sea is disrupted by a beam of light, evoking the idea of an apparition.
At a time when societies are confronted with information overload, new technology and the incessant consumption of images, Genadry’s work offers a space of respite and contemplation, an invitation to observe and be in the present moment.
