Lamya Gargash (b. 1982, Dubai, United Arab Emirates) is a photographer whose work brings to light the public and private spaces of residents of the UAE. Gargash – who lives and works in Dubai – navigates the social changes accelerated by globalisation and industrialisation in her work, highlighting the ebb and flow of tradition and culture in a period of rapid transformation.
In 2004, Gargash graduated from the American University of Sharjah and subsequently obtained a postgraduate degree in communication design from Central Saint Martins in London. Her pieces are found in the permanent collections of leading institutions such as the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah and the Sharjah Art Foundation. The artist’s work also featured in the UAE’s inaugural participation in the Venice Biennale, at its 53rd iteration in 2009: Making Worlds.
Gargash takes her inspiration from interiors, notably vacant interiors, often creating haunting scenes. She focuses her lens on the forgotten and disregarded, providing the viewer with a glimpse of the unspoken traditions of the Emirati people. Magnifying the personal elements of local cultures, she bears witness to the nuances that may differ between regions, families and even individuals.
