Haleh Redjaian (b. 1971, Frankfurt, Germany) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Berlin. She read art history at Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt, in 1994, going on to study fine arts at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp from 1998 to 1999. Her work has been exhibited internationally in both solo and group exhibitions at venues including Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde, Dubai; Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin; and Galerie Krobath, Vienna.
The artist’s practice spans drawings, textiles and installations. Working in the language of abstraction and geometry, she unites linear systems in hypnotic compositions. Her influences include traditional systems of order and Sufi art and architecture: she imbues her works with her knowledge of this decorative heritage and draws attention to irregularities in pattern.
Redjaian’s oeuvre includes major works created with white kilim rugs. The artist commissions a small family-run business in Sirjan, Iran, to make these handwoven textiles for her which serve as blank canvases. She then proceeds to paint, print and sew onto them, creating a relationship between artisan traditions and her own artistic practices. Her work thus threads together the Middle East’s history of ornamentation with the aesthetics of Western geometric abstraction.
